Introducing the New Bushman Middlefield

When we launched the Knittlinger in April 2025, we set out to solve a problem that double reed harmonica players had accepted for generations: why couldn’t an octave harmonica be easy to play?

The Knittlinger proved that it could.

Now we’re following up with our second octave harmonica design—the all-new Bushman Middlefield.

Like the Knittlinger, the Middlefield is exceptionally responsive and easy playing. It features the same fast, comfortable mouthpiece design and delivers the rich, full accordion-like tone that makes octave harmonicas so enjoyable to play.

But the Middlefield introduces an important refinement: silent windsavers.

Windsavers are essential in a double reed harmonica because they prevent air from escaping through inactive reed slots. The downside is that traditional windsavers can create buzzing or flapping noises during play.

To solve that problem, we searched extensively for a better material and developed a quieter windsaver system that dramatically reduces unwanted noise while maintaining excellent airtightness and response.

The result is an octave harmonica that delivers big, rich sound with less distraction and greater playing comfort.

The Middlefield offers the speed and responsiveness players loved in the Knittlinger, but with a more traditional shape and our new quieter windsaver technology.

As innovation in octave harmonicas continues to move forward, we’re proud to remain at the forefront of that progress.

Available Keys (low to high):
Low A, Low Bb, Low C, Low D, Low E, Low F, and G.

Description

Bushman Music Works, in cooperation with the Mundharmonika Orchestra of Knittlingen, began hosting a gathering of harmonica fans in Knittlingen, Germany on the last Saturday in September every year.  One of the aims of the festival is to bring together experienced, passionate harmonica players for the purpose of brainstorming ways we can improve the instrument and expand its capabilities.

The first Knittlingen Mundharmonika Festival, was held on September 27th, 2025, and a good time was had by all.  The next fest will be held September 25th – 26th, 2026.  With the fest, we honor the rich and important harmonica legacy of Knittlingen, and we remember the octave harmonica inventor Friedrich Hotz, as well Peter Pohl, and all the other great Knittlingen harmonica entrepreneurs who did so much for the instrument we enjoy today.
